Movie Mash-Up: Carrie, Thor: The Dark World, Elle S'En Va.

With the terrible weather and rain we've had lately, who wants to be outside? No one, obviously. So what do you do to fill your time? Go to the cinema, obviously. I've taken my own advice and have been a regular guest at the cinema these last two weeks, enjoying popcorn and the big screen. Although I saw quite a variety of kinds of films, I decided to put them all together in one article, with a couple of mini reviews mashed-up together.

Carrie (2013)

I was pleasantly surprised by Carrie. I initially didn't want to see this film, but then I saw a trailer and decided I might want to see it afterall. Most of you will know the story, but the film is about Carrie, a teenage girl with a very regilious mother who doesn't fit in at school. When she gets her first period in the shower after PE and panicks, the other girls make fun of her. The emotional stress she experiences awakens her telekinetic powers, and when she is made fun of once more at prom, all hell breaks loose. I thought Chloe Moretz portrayed Carrie convincingly as an awkward girl who just doesn't understand the world around her, but it is Julianne Moore who really steals the show with her portrayal of Carrie's crazy mum. I would have liked to see a bit more of Carrie figuring out her powers, as this was one of my favourite parts of the film, but all in all I thought the film portrayed the emotional turmoil of Carrie very well and was filmed very beautifully, with good music in the background. I read somewhere that the book is the best, the 1976 film slightly worse than the book, and this film even worse than the 1976 film, but since I haven't seen the 1976 film nor read the book, I really liked the 2013 version. I am very curious about the book now, so might have to pick that up some time soon.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor: The Dark World is a film that does not take itself too seriously, and is all the better for it. I laughed so much throughout this film. There were so many silly moments that I can only imagine the kind of fun they must have had filming this film. Of course, there is a plot here as well. Jane (Natalie Portman) becomes infected with the Aether, a sort of power the dark elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) wants to use to destroy all the nine worlds. So Thor (Chris Hemsworth) comes back to earth for her, takes her to Asgard and needs to find a way to get the Aether out of her whilst defeating Malekith at the same time. And a big fight with a lot of transportation throughout all the worlds ensues. Of course, there is also the problem of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to deal with, and the relationship between Thor and his brother adds a bit of interest to the film. Loki, of course, is also responsible for a few shocks throughout the film. As said, this film is incredibly funny, also manages to go into different relationships a bit more, and there is a lot of excitement about science. I would thoroughly recommend this film to anyone and everyone. Honestly, if you don't like this, there's not much hope left.

Elle S'En Va (2013)

And now for something completely different. Elle S'En Va is a French film (the title should have given this away) and very different in tone from the other two films. The film is about Bettie (Catherine Deneuve), a sixty-something woman who is tired of her problematic love life and the financial troubles with her restaurant, who decides to just step into the car and drive away, picking up her grandson somewhere along the way. This film felt mostly character-driven to me; not that there isn't anything happening (Bettie actually gets into the weirdest situations as she cruises through France), but the focus is on her emotional state and wellfare and her coming to terms with her life. It's a very relaxing film, because of the relatively low pace of the story, but it also provides a few laughs along the way and a very satisfying ending. There's some great music in the background and the scenery of France looks beautiful.
